GRAND OPENING
~
October 14, 2007
The Cosmetology Association
of New Brunswick is as unique, diverse and as talented as the members in
which it governs. The members, staff, Board of Directors, and Committee
members are very pleased to be celebrating the “Grand Opening” of their
new functional and modern facility at 220 Whiting Road, Fredericton. A
great deal of planning, love, sweat and determination went into this new
location. The Association’s ultimate goal was to provide the membership
with a positive, professional, functional location where the business of
the association could be conducted. The new location provides adequate
space to host annual meetings and related training seminars and conducts
all level of provincial examinations. The CANB has captured all the
requirements necessary to operate efficiently in this new building. It
is spacious, inviting, functional and best of all it belongs to all
members of the CANB.
There
is a long history to this professional association, surviving many
challenges but overcoming and persevering to be successful, strong and a
very ambition. From 1962 until 1998 the reigns of the organization was
held by the New Brunswick Hairdressers’ Association. Many great members
and Board of Directors governed and secured the survival of the
organization.
Faye
Somers, Saint John, Evelyn Grant, Fredericton and Walter MacDonald of
Saint John were a few of the founding members of the New Brunswick
Hairdressers’ Association. The successor organization faced a new and
inviting challenge in 1996 and after two years of addressing the
industry through provincial government, a private bill known as “The
Cosmetology Association of New Brunswick” was granted Royal Ascent on
February 26, 1998. This new piece of legislation encompassed all
aspects of the beauty industry which included hairdressers,
aestheticians, barbers, nail technicians and make-up artists. The NB
Hairdresser’s Association grew from 3500 members, Cosmetology
Association to 7600 as of today. There has recently been legislative
changes, but very little has actually changed within the organization.
Members remain strong, supportive and content to belong to a
professional organization; which continues to provide positive and
necessary governing of the industry to protect the public as well as our
members.
The
Association works hard for the industry as well as its members to
support the demands of an ever changing industry.
It
provides the membership with options for various health and personal
insurances, registered retirement savings plan, produces an annual
magazine, has a website to interact with suppliers, job banks and
general information. It honors the longevity of the members by hosting
gala events with prizes and awards such as the 25+ Year Club and the
Wall of Fame. As permitted the CANB also hosts and provides prizes for
numerous competitions. It has supported students who competed in the
Skills Canada Competitions, offers awards and monetary prizes to
students and schools who have achieved the highest provincial marks
within their training and offers additional training to all
instructors. The association hosts Mini-Shows throughout the province
supported by the industries leading supply companies. The association
works closely with various industry related association and licensing
bodies both nationally and internationally. In 2006 the association
hosted a meeting with all the Atlantic Cosmetology Associations and
British Columbia Association where the four associations developed a
positive and supportive repore and are planning to continue for the
betterment of the self-governing bodies.
On
October 14, 2007, the Honorable Roly McIntyre and Fredericton Mayor Brad
Woodside did the honors of unveiling a commerative stone that has been
placed at the base of a recently planted maple tree in the front yard of
the new building. The stone’s message reads “In recognition of the
strength, ambition and spirit of each member of the CANB, October 14,
2007”. They also assisted with the ribbon cutting ceremony, all to
honor the past, present and future of the Cosmetology Association of New
Brunswick and its members that it serves. The association is extremely
grateful to have had such honorable individuals attend this event.
The
road to success for this diverse and talented organization has been
frustrating at times, but with the strength of its members and united
allies the association will continue to grow, meet industries needs and
support the members of the CANB. Nothing makes you stronger than to
overcome your weaknesses and challenges and the CANB is up for that
challenge.
