PROFILE OF A CHAMPION

DONNIE COHOLAN

Donnie has become one of New Brunswick’s top hairstyling competitors. There is an extensive list of attributes to be credited to Donnie, such as CANB champion, Atlantic Canadian Champion several times, competed in Paris, France, Toronto Canadian Championships placing highest 3rd; he was selected to be a member of Team Canada for the Hair World Competition held in March of 2008 in Chicago, USA. Here, Canada placed 8th in the world standings, the highest place in many years.

To be a strong competitor one must have that competitive nature, skills, creativity, and artistic ability and most of all to be extremely dedicated and hardworking. Donnie trained for HairWorld by traveling back and forth to Toronto devoting an additional 30 hours a week to his already hectic workweek. None the less very grateful for the opportunity to represent Canada and we are indebted to him for his sacrifice.

Donnie began his career 15 years ago and for the past 8 years has been a co-owner of Salon Circa, Saint John. Early on in his career he became a competitor, which gave him the confidence and fortitude to pursue the big prize of being on the Canadian Hairstyling Team. His passion for the industry and the craft of competition is still as much fun for him now as it was in the beginning of his career. Competitors of all levels have been successful in their winnings by being trained by Donnie.

Part of being a successful professional is continuously being educated; Donnie has accomplished a dream come true and is currently training to become a competition trainer. He would like to share his knowledge of the beauty of competition and the work of art that can be created with one strand of hair to the industries news stylists and competitors.

Congratulations to a very talented hair professional for achieving the greatest successes and we look forward to another chapter in Donnie’s career.

Award Winning Cosmetologist - PAUL LEBLANC

Paul LeBlanc, a member of the Association has come home to New Brunswick after a long honorable hairstyling and make‑up career in the film industry. He has numerous awards and accreditations; the most prominent award is the Academy Award (Oscar) received for Best Make‑Up in 1984 for the movie "Amadeus". The Oscar sits comfortable between his other awards respectfully placed on a glass shelf in the entrance of his prestigious new salon "Studio Paul LeBlanc" in Dieppe. Other notable award nominations are for working on such films as Big Fish (2003), Children of the Dune (mini series 2003), Anywhere But Here (1999). To his credit there has been over 57 productions that he has contributed his work too. The latest is "No Country for Old Men" where Paul created the hairstyle for actor Javier Bardern who received an Academy Award for his role as a murderous hit man. The hairstyle was a combination of British warriors in the medieval Crusades as well as the 1960 hairstyles. Bardern who won an Academy Award for his role proclaimed that the hairstyle was "one of the most horrible haircuts in history", which proves Paul made it work for this particular character.

Paul explains that his training in 1965, at New Brunswick Technical School in Moncton laid down the fundamentals for his great success. He always felt that he had received a strong foundation in his training and that was apparent where ever he went. Mastering the skills of fingerwaves, sculpting and pincurls Paul developed the art of working on wigs such as those he created for Amadeus. His passion spills over into his shop where he educates his staff on period hairstyles. Some of his pieces are exhibited in the "Alexandre de Paris", France museum where many historical hairstyling pieces can be found. It is evident that Paul loves history; he draws inspiration for his work by studying and researching it. When designing hairpieces he collaborates with the costume department.

With a charismatic personality Paul explains that in order to take care of others you must take care of yourself first, our customers take from us, a vibe that they absorb. Words of wisdom, which sustain truth about our cosmetology industry.

Paul's declaration to his success is his daring and adventurous side, which helped open doors to wonderful destinations that he would not have dreamt possible. He maintains that his confidence guided him, which in turn supported his success.

What a lifetime adventure for this New Brunswicker traveling around the world, working with movie stars, producers and directors! Welcome home Paul!
