Impressive
performance from Team New Brunswick at 16th annual
Canadian Skills Competition in Waterloo.
A team of 30
students from New Brunswick high schools, colleges and private
training institutions gave an impressive performance this week
at the 16th annual Canadian Skills Competition held
in Waterloo, Ontario.
Every year, the
event brings together over 500 young people from all regions of
Canada, along with their parents and advisors, to compete in
over 40 trade and technology areas. The two-day competition
provides an opportunity for young Canadians studying a skilled
trade or technology to be tested against exacting standards and
against their peers from across the nation. Students vie to win
the honor of being crowned the best in their chosen discipline.
The main goals of
this event are to provide competitors with hands-on work
experience and to raise awareness for the general population of
the value of and challenge in skilled trades and technology
careers. The Canadian Skills Competition showcases the talent
and the expertise of young competitors from across Canada. It is
the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology
competition for young students and apprentices in the country.
Team New Brunswick
was able to bring back a total of 6 medals from the event as

In addition to its
great showing, one student from Team NB has been invited to a
national team.
Jenica Bubar, a
post-secondary student attending Medes College in Moncton was
invited to represent Canada in the field of Esthetics at the
2011 WordSkills Competition which will be presented in London,
England.
From October 5th-8th,
2011; London will host the largest international vocational
skills competition in the world. WorldSkills London will be held
at ExCeL London exhibition and conference centre in London’s
docklands.
Students
participating with Team New Brunswick had been selected through
a series of provincial competitions that were presented
throughout the spring months at different high school and
college campuses.
Skills
Canada New Brunswick is a not-for-profit organization devoted to
the promotion of the career possibilities in the trades and
technologies. A misunderstanding of the value of careers in
trades and technologies inhibits many young Canadians from
considering these types of career options. Through provincial
olympic-style competitions, Skills Canada NB helps make these
occupations more visible for teachers, youth, parents, industry
and the general public.
